In the “Sankelmark Europe talks”, representatives from politics, economics and science discuss about current European and political questions and its effects in the region of Southern Schleswig.

Do you want to stay informed about what is happening in the region in relation to Europe? At Europa News, a website of the Europa-Union Schleswig-Holstein, you will also find detailed information on how Europe is active in Schleswig-Holstein and how Schleswig-Holstein is active in Europe. Various blog posts on topics such as mobility, climate protection and energy, explanations of EU policy areas such as youth or the economy, and interesting facts, as well as a calendar of Europe events illustrate the EU’s relevance in Schleswig-Holstein and vice versa.

Experience Europe through play: What kind of Europe do we want?

At the Sankelmark Academy, you can also engage interactively with the challenges facing the EU. In the In the former bunker of the state government of Schleswig-Holstein on the grounds of the academy, you will become a delegation in an interactive course, making decisions on current challenges facing the EU and taking a look into the future: Which versions of Europe do we want? Which ones do we fear? Do we want to come closer together and dismantle borders, harmonize social systems or would we rather rely on nation states?

The stubborn, dimly lit atmosphere of the bunker becomes a retreat for reflection and negotiation in order to ultimately found the European institutions of a utopian future.

Theaterwerkstatt Pilkentafel, Flensburg, developed the idea for the course and accompanies school classes and adult groups from the region who complete the “Escape Europe” course.

EUROPE DIRECT Southern Schleswig is part of the EUROPE DIRECT network in Germany, which belongs to a Europe-wide association of 424 centers. Südschleswig, der nördliche Teil Schleswig-Holsteins, verbindet traditionell Skandinavien mit Mitteleuropa. Deshalb haben sich auch die beiden deutschen Landkreise Nordfriesland und Schleswig-Flensburg sowie die Stadt Flensburg mit den süddänischen Kommunen Aabenraa, Sønderborg, Tinglev und Tønder zur grenzübergreifenden Region Sønderjylland-Schleswig zusammengeschlossen.

In diesem Rahmen arbeiten die Kommunen, aber auch Organisationen der Zivilgesellschaft und Einzelpersonen grenzüberschreitend zusammen und praktizieren das „Europa vor Ort“. Eine wichtige Rolle nehmen dabei die beiden nationalen Minderheiten ein, die dänische Minderheit in Deutschland und die deutsche Minderheit in Dänemark.

Sie räumen mit Ihrer Kenntnis beider Sprachen, beider Mentalitäten, beider Systeme und der jeweils handelnden Personen auf beiden Seiten mögliche Stolpersteine in der deutsch-dänischen Zusammenarbeit aus dem Wege. Diese grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit wird auch von der Europäischen Union mit Mitteln aus den INTERREG-Programmen gefördert.

Europa ist in Südschleswig präsent, auch wenn man das nicht immer auf den ersten Blick sieht. Dabei werden gerade durch die Förder- und Investitionsprogramme der Europäischen Union viele Dinge in der Region bewegt.

In der Förderperiode 2014-2020 hat Schleswig-Holstein rund 360 Millionen Euro aus EU Regional- und Sozialfonds erhalten. Dabei lagen die Schwerpunkte der Förderung bei Investitionen in Wachstum und Beschäftigung. Im Vordergrund stehen unter anderem der Schutz der Umwelt und Ressourceneffizienz, angewandte Forschung, Entwicklung und Innovation, sowie Förderung der Beschäftigung und Mobilität, Bildung, Kompetenzen, lebenslanges Lernen und soziale Inklusion und Armutsbekämpfung.

Ein beispielhaftes gefördertes Projekt in der Region Südschleswig ist die Schaffung von Erlebnisangeboten für den Eider-Treene-Sorge Radweg, den Wikinger-Friesen-Weg, die Grenzroute sowie das Kanurevier. Auch Projekte zum Thema Hochwasser- und Küstenschutz und weitere Tourismusprojekte wurden aus diesem Topf schon bewilligt. Durch die von der EU zur Verfügung gestellten Mittel sind schon 2.000 neue Ausbildungsplätze geschaffen und 195.000 Menschen unterstützt worden.

Auch Unternehmen aus dem Mittelstand sowie Start Ups konnten durch die vorhandenen Mittel gefördert werden. Damit wird die Wirtschaft in der Region gestärkt. Eine besondere Rolle spielt dabei die grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit mit Dänemark und den anderen Ostseeanrainerstaaten, die mit Hilfe von EU-Mitteln aufgebaut wurde und kontinuierlich weiter vertieft wird.
